  17. Various techniques and devices that police use to detect speed                 
  18. ---------------------------------------------------------------

  20.    1. Pace Car surveylance - This was the first and most simple
  21.       way to check someone for speeding. A police car would 
  22.       simply fall in behind someone go as fast as they are 
  23.       going then he takes a simple look at his speedometer.
  24.       If your going over 55 (on some highways its now 65) then
  25.       he could simply pull you over and issue you a citation.

  27.    2. Visual Contact - This is also a simple means by which a
  28.       police officer observes drivers going both ways and 
  29.       determines whether a car is speeding or not. (An easy 
  30.       way they determine this is whether or not the car they 
  31.       believe is speeding is passing or catching up with 
  32.       other cars on the road.) Today many police take classes
  33.       in which they learn how to guess and determine a car's
  34.       speed.

  36.    3. Radar Check - A device that shoots a beam out at the 
  37.       object and then bounces it back to the radar with a
  38.       digital speed number. They use one of two bands that
  39.       the radars work off of: X Band - A old band with short
  40.       range and it tends to leak out more...giving radar 
  41.       detectors earlier signals. K Band - A new band with
  42.       longer range and less of a leakage is the new standard.
  43.       These are the only bands that the FCC has allowed for 
  44.       this type of equipment so far. Radar detectors are 
  45.       effective against a radar device as long as the radar 
  46.       beam is on. New INSTANT ON RADARS shoot the beam at the
  47.       push of a trigger (also known as guns). Thus no beam 
  48.       coming out until a car (maybe your own) is shot which is
  49.       when the radar will go off. If a car is shot ahead of you
  50.       your in luck. Because with a radar you will hear a warning
  51.       in time to slow down. The older constant on radars keep a

  68.       4. Aircraft Monitoring - Now employed in major cities 
  69.          are aircraft to monitor highway speeding. Helicopters
  70.          as well as small airplanes are used and watch for
  71.          excessive speeders. Also watching for cars passing
  72.          other cars at excessive speeds.

  74.       5. Camera Tracking - Already used in some parts of Texas
  75.          as well as in Europe is a camera device that clocks a
  76.          car as it goes by and takes a picture of the license 
  77.          plate if the car is speeding.  The pictures are 
  78.          collected and plates looked up as the speeders recieve
  79.          there tickets in the mail. The new device is made by
  80.          a company that calls the device "TOM SPEED". It is 
  81.          usually placed on bridges hanging down.

  83.       6. Stop Watch - Another way in use of checking for speed
  84.          is the use of stop watching. A particular car, maybe
  85.          unmarked sits aside on the side of the road and tells
  86.          another car down the road to start his stop watch. As
  87.          the car races down the road the first policeman tells
  88.          the other policeman what kind of car it is and its 
  89.          plate number. If the car comes by the second cop at
  90.          a low time on the stop watch the policeman chases. A
  91.          time of travel is figured out if the car is going at
  92.          the speed limit, then if a car's time is lower than 
  93.          that number then he or she is speeding.

  95.       LAST MINUTE TIPS
  96.           -The fast lane is the passing lane or left lane,
  97.            police watch this lane good.
  98.           -Take extra caution when approaching any town.
  99.           -Watch for unmarked cars and aircraft.
